J. C. Bose Grant (JBG)

Objective:
Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) announces call for proposals for the new scheme called ANRF J. C. Bose Grant. The ANRF J. C. Bose Grant is meant to recognize active, senior scientists and engineers within our country for their outstanding performance and contributions. The prestigious ANRF J. C. Bose Grant is individual-specific, very selective and encourages senior level researchers for extra-mural funding to further enhance their research in frontline avenues. The nominations for senior scientists and engineers aged 45-65 years and working with Indian institutions/universities may be submitted through the ANRF online portal.


Eligibility:

  • The aspirants should be an active and senior scientist/engineer with a record of outstanding performance through indicators like publications, research outcomes, patents, technology transfers, awards, grants etc. in all science and engineering domains (including agriculture, medicine and humanities and social sciences at the interface of science and technology).
  • The applicant must hold a regular academic/research position in a recognized academic/research institution in India by the time of submission of application. In the event that the awardee superannuates during the tenure of the grant, the award may be continued, subject to the willingness of a host institution to continue hosting the Principal Investigator (PI).
  • The applicant should be at the age of 45-65 years by the time of submission of application
  • The nominee should be an Indian national or Overseas citizen of India (OCI) employed working in Institutions/Universities in India at a senior position with sufficient residual official service in India (project duration+1 year) and fulfil the eligibility criteria notified by ANRF (Norms for OCI to apply for grant in ANRF ).
  • The J C Bose fellow/grantee with ongoing fellowship/grant will only be eligible to apply if the date of completion of ongoing fellowship/grant is within 6 months from the date of submission of new proposal for grant.
  • Applicants already completed 3 terms as JCB fellow/grantee, whichever is applicable, are not eligible.
  • The J.C. Bose grantee is also eligible to apply other grants of ANRF, subject to fulfilling the conditions of that program and funding policy of ANRF.

Nomination:
The nominations can be sent by the Heads of the Institutions/Universities or Presidents of National Science Academies.


Selection:
The process of selection for ANRF J. C. Bose grants will be conducted once a year by a group of technical experts i.e. Search-cum-Selection Committee specially constituted for the purpose and as per the broad guidelines of the grant.


Nature & Duration:
The research grant of Rs. 25 lakhs annually will be provided under two budget heads: A) Recurring Head (covering Manpower, Consumables, travel, contingency and other costs) and B) Non-recurring Head (Equipment) up to 20% of the total grant. Additionally, Rs. 1.0 lakh annually (fixed) will also be provided as "Overheads" to the implementing institution.
The grant shall be awarded for a period of five years.


For successful online submission of the application the following may be noted:
The Call for nominations for the ANRF J. C. Bose grant will be notified through the website "www.anrfonline.in". The nominations along with other requisite details of the nominee highlighting the credentials and research work to be undertaken should be submitted only through the website "www.anrfonline.in".

  • Nominee need to register in ANRF online portal (www.anrfonline.in) and fill the required details along with details of the nominator.
  • After filling the details, Nominee should click on "Send to Nominator" It is the responsibility of the applicant to follow up with the nominators and ensure timely submission of application.
  • Nominator would receive intimation via email with a link to ANRF online portal, to view the filled-in ANRF J. C. Bose Grant Nomination form. In any case, nomination should be submitted to through ANRF portal preferably one week in advance or by closure date.
  • Nominator can choose to submit the nomination to ANRF or resend the form to Nominee for any revision.
  • Once submitted, Nominee and Nominator will receive intimation regarding successful submission.

    A1: The ANRF J. C. Bose Grant is meant to recognize active and senior scientists/engineers for their outstanding performance. The grant is individual-specific and very selective.

     

    Q2: What are the eligibility criteria for applying/availing J. C. Bose Grant?

    A2: The PI should be an active scientist/engineer with a record of outstanding performance apparent from publications, patents, technology transfers, awards, notable research outcomes etc. The nominee should be an Indian national or Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) working in institutions in India at the time of nomination to this grant.

     

    Q3: What are the areas covered under J. C. Bose Grant?

    A3: All Areas of Science and Technology (in the broadest terms) are covered by this Grant including Humanities and Social Sciences at the interface of Science and Technology.

     

    Q4:What is the nature of support for the J. C. Bose Grant?

    A4: The ANRF J. C. Bose grantee will receive a Research Grant of Rs. 25.00 Lakh per annum [(A) Recurring Head (covering Manpower, Consumables, travel, contingency and other costs) and (B) Non-recurring Head (Equipment) up to 20% of the total grant]. Additionally, Rs.1.00 Lakh is provided as Overheads for the host institute.

     

    Q5: Are past ANRF J. C. Bose grantees/ J. C. Bose fellows of erstwhile SERB eligible for JC Bose grant in current cycle?

    A5: JC Bose Fellows/Grantees with an ongoing fellowship or grant shall be eligible to apply, if the current fellowship or grant is due to conclude within six months from the date of submission of the new grant proposal. Investigators who have completed three terms as a JC Bose Fellow and/or Grantee are not eligible to apply.

     

    Q6: Can a PI avail both ANRF J. C. Bose grant and any other research grants of ANRF at a time?

    A6: J.C. Bose grant does not impose any condition to hold any other grant of ANRF. The J.C. Bose grantee can apply any other grant of ANRF during the tenure, subject to conditions of the respective program and as per the funding policy of ANRF.

     

    Q7: What is the age limit up to which the ANRF J. C. Bose Grant can be availed?

    A7: The proposal for J C Bose grant can be submitted in the age group of 45 years to 65 years at the time to submission of the proposal.

     

    Q8: Can Co-PI be involved in JCB grant scheme?

    A8: There is no provision for Co-PIs under the ANRF J. C. Bose grant.

     

    Q9: Can the ANRF J. C. Bose grantee continue the grant after superannuation?

    A9: The ANRF J. C. Bose grant can be continued after superannuation provided a host institution is willing to host the PI and provide all necessary infrastructure and administrative support.

     

    Q10: When can a person apply for the ANRF J. C. Bose grant? What is the last date of acceptance of the proposal?

    A10: The nominations for the ANRF J. C. Bose grant are based on announcement of the call. For the present year, the last date of acceptance nominations is 10th Februrary 2026.

     

    Q11: Who can nominate for ANRF J. C. Bose Grants?

    A11: Heads of Institutions/Universities or Presidents of Science Academies can send the nominations.

     

    Q12:What is the duration of the ANRF J. C. Bose Grant?

    A12:The duration of J.C. Bose grant is 5 years.

     

    Q13: How/When can the individual start his/her ANRF J. C. Bose Grant?

    A13: The approval letter will be sent to the Individual informing the award of ANRF J. C. Bose Grant. On receipt of this offer letter, the Individual has to acknowledge the approval letter and submit the required documents to the ANRF. Upon receipt of the mandatory documents, ANRF will process for necessary approvals and a Sanction Order will be issued to the host institute (with a copy to the ANRF J. C. Bose awardee). The start date of the grant will be the date of receipt of first assignment to host institute.

     

     

    Q14: How does a ANRF J. C. Bose Grantee get his/her subsequent Grant?

    A14: The Grant for the subsequent years is released after receiving Statement of Expenditure (SE) and Utilization Certificate (UC) along with progress report through the online portal (www.anrfonline.in). The SE and UC are to be submitted financial year wise i.e. from 01st April to 31st March. For the first year it would be from the Date of Start (DOS) to 31st March and subsequently from 01st April to 31st March.

     

     

    Q15: Can a PI change the host institute during implementation of ANRF J. C. Bose Grant?

    A15: ANRF J. C. Bose grantee can change the host institute during implementation of the grant. He/She has to forward NOCs from both the institutions along with final financial papers indicating balance unspent grant from the old institute and endorsement certificate from the new institution (format available on ANRF website) with a copy of appointment /offer letter from the new institute. Any such information has to be sent to ANRF well in advance before joining the new institution.
